ADHD in adulthood – finding a life that fits you

ADHD is not a character flaw but a self-regulation difficulty. Psychotherapy helps develop strategies that fit the ADHD brain – for more quality of life and self-acceptance.

ADHD in adulthood

Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder often presents differently in adults than in childhood. Instead of pronounced hyperactivity, inner restlessness, difficulty concentrating, forgetfulness or problems with structure and time management are often in the foreground. Many people find daily life exhausting and feel quickly overwhelmed and burdened by conflicts – professionally, privately or in relationships.
Many adults with ADHD also experience additional burdens such as strong irritability, feelings of shame or insecurity. Depression or anxiety can also arise as a result of years of being overwhelmed, self-doubt and the feeling of being „different“.

At the same time, people with ADHD often bring particular strengths: creativity, spontaneity, enthusiasm and the ability to develop a strong focus on topics that interest them. With the right support, a better understanding of one's own patterns and suitable strategies, a balanced and successful everyday life can succeed.
I support people with ADHD empathetically and professionally in better understanding the fireworks in their head, dealing with distressing feelings such as anxiety or depression, and developing practical everyday strategies for more stability, structure, self-confidence and quality of life.

It feels as if your brain runs on a different operating system than the people around you.

Neurodiversity and the clinical picture of ADHD

Neurodiversity and the clinical picture of ADHD
Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder is a medically recognized disorder of neurobiological development, associated with symptoms such as inattention, impulsivity and inner restlessness, and can significantly impair daily life.
Neurodiversity, on the other hand, is not a clinical picture but a social and scientific concept. It describes that human brains function differently and that neurological differences – for example ADHD, autism spectrum disorder or dyslexia – are part of natural human diversity.

ADHD

A concrete diagnosis with possible burdens and a need for treatment – the symptoms are permanently present.

Neurodiversity

An overarching perspective on neurological diversity: the brain processes information, stimuli, emotions and attention differently than in neurotypical people.

Possible symptoms – do you recognize your difficulties?

ADHD shows up in many areas of life. These patterns can be indications of ADHD or ADHD-related neurodiversity.

Impulsivity

Rash decisions, impulse purchases, risky actions, difficulty waiting, impatience – for example in waiting situations or in traffic.

Inner restlessness

Unable to switch off, racing thoughts, a constant urge to move, quick overwhelm from stimuli, a feeling of inner tension.

Emotions

Irritability, mood swings, quick frustration, misunderstandings with others and the abandonment of projects.

Organization

Chaos with appointments and tasks, procrastination, chronic time pressure and avoidance behavior.

Social

Talkativeness, interruptions, inappropriate behavior in groups, relationship problems due to impulsivity.

Work

Performance fluctuations, underestimated potential, frequent job changes, dissatisfaction and financial instability.

Health

Sleep problems, lack of concentration, daytime fatigue, exhaustion and increased susceptibility to addiction.

Important note on diagnosis

A reliable diagnosis of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder must always be made by appropriately qualified specialists or psychological psychotherapists – also to identify possible comorbidities such as depression or anxiety disorders. As a Heilpraktikerin for psychotherapy, if ADHD is suspected I can offer you a screening procedure, structured assessment conversations and questionnaires to gather indications of possible ADHD symptoms and provide an initial professional assessment.
