What Are Anxiety Disorders?

Anxiety disorders are among the most common mental health conditions. They manifest as excessive anxiety and worry that is disproportionate to the actual threat. The anxiety can relate to specific situations or appear as a general, diffuse feeling.
Typical physical symptoms include racing heart, sweating, trembling, shortness of breath, dizziness, and gastrointestinal complaints. Many sufferers develop avoidance behavior – they avoid situations that could trigger anxiety, which paradoxically reinforces the anxiety.
